Fall Season Arts & Healing Workshop: Huellas

Aliento is having our fall Arts & Healing workshop on September 2nd, 2023! We will be making monoprints using gelli plates while reflecting on our place in the world.

Gelli plate printing is an art technique where you create a pattern on a gelli plate that is used to transfer on paper to create a print. Due to the nature of gelli plate printing, every print will be unique, as you can only use a pattern once. But before we begin printing, we will reflect on our uniqueness as people and what print we want to leave on the world and people around us.

What are things that you are waiting to come to fruition, be it in your community or in your life? We’ll be decorating (wooden) pumpkins with those hopes and wishes in mind! We also want to invite you to share folklore from your community. Join us for a night of stories and pumpkin decorating!

June Open Mic:

Many things can change in 10 years, as well as stay the same. Were there some things you wished you could have done differently? What have you accomplished? What were your happiest moments in the last 10 years? Were there any moments that were tough to handle? Maybe you were able to travel, or maybe you graduated high school or college. Maybe you want to reflect on how the world or environment has changed or how it hasn’t. Whatever your journey has been since 2012, we hope that you will join us in reflecting on anything that comes up for you as we reflect on our lives. If you’d like to come and hold space for the recent events that have happened you are more than welcome to. Join us on June 3rd at Palabras Bilingual Bookstore to reflect on the collection of stories and memories we have accumulated for the last 10 years!

May Arts & Healing Workshop

May is the time for celebrations. Some of us are celebrating Mother’s Day, graduations, or family or friends’ graduations. Maybe you aren’t celebrating any of these things, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have anything to celebrate! It’s never a bad time to honor our achievements. Sometimes it can feel as if we aren’t allowed to recognize our accomplishments or maybe we just don’t have the space to do so.

May Open Mic: I've Been Raised

Aliento’s May open mic will be a space where we reflect on the different parts of life that have helped raised us to be the person we are today.  We want to celebrate not only the people that have helped raise us but the environment. How has being raised in a multigenerational household raised us, or how has living in Arizona raised us? Maybe the Arizona sunsets have helped raised us to appreciate the colors of the sky. Maybe living with our grandparents raised us to appreciate family more. Join us on May 6th at the Phoenix Hostel and Cultural Center to consider who and what has raised us throughout our lives!

Arts & Healing Workshop: Collage + Paint

Many things have changed since the beginning of the year. Some of us are graduating, some of us have moved, maybe we’ve gotten new jobs, maybe we’ve quit our old job and are still on the journey to finding a new one. Nothing that we accomplish is done completely by ourselves. Wherever we are in our lives, we have people in our lives who push us to be better people to achieve our goals and that believe in us. We want this workshop to be a space for us to celebrate those in our lives who have supported us for the past 4 months

April Open Mic: Blooming Joy

Sometimes we can feel so stressed we can forget to laugh. Life can be a series of challenges and hardships yet we can also experience joy and laughter during those times. One day we can be in the middle of a difficult situation and then another day we look back and find little slivers of joy and laughter. As flowers have started to bloom, the weather is becoming warmer, and the days are longer let us be reminded of the joy that can bloom within.

Join us for our April Open Mic to remember the moments of joy in our lives.

March Arts & Healing Workshop: Still Waters

Given everything that’s happening around us, it often feels like things are out of our control. It can often feel like we’re powerless in changing the world around us. Yet it’s important to remember that we do hold some control. We have agency and the power to change things. What would it feel like to let go of things out of our control? What would it look like to recognize and refocus our energy on the things in our lives we can control? Join us at our workshop for some watercolor painting and examine what it means to have agency.

March Open Mic: Currents

It can feel like we are being pulled by the currents of life. Sometimes it may feel as though life is rushing past us.

Many of us are juggling school, work, family, friends, etc. What if we took a moment to pause and reflect on our place in the world and the events that are happening around us? How would it feel like to stand still for a moment and focus on how the currents of our lives make us feel?

Join us for our March open mic!

Arts & Healing Workshop: Vidrios de Colores

All of us are a collection of different aspects of ourselves. There are some things we wish to improve on and there are other parts of ourselves that we take pride in. Having both parts are what makes us whole and multi-dimensional people. As we make our way through the flows of life, what would it look like for us to acknowledge the parts of ourselves we want to improve on? What would it feel like to celebrate the parts of ourselves that we love? What would it feel like for us to see both parts as essential for our growth?

Open Mic: Lunar Phases

With all that’s happened recently, many emotions may be running through our heads. If we were to imagine our lives as a series of lunar phases, it may feel as if the current phase is covered in a large shadow, like a new moon, or you might be feeling mixed emotions, half heavy and light, like a half-moon. Wherever we are, it is important to be able to recognize our emotional state and where we are in the world. Join us for a small community space, at our first open mic in-person* Open Mic: Lunar Phases.
