SCR1044 - In-State Tuition for All Arizona High-School Graduates Moves Forward In The House of Representatives

Phoenix, AZ - On May 5th, 2021, the Arizona House of Representatives moved forward with SCR1044 (32-28 vote count). SCR1044 will provide in-state tuition to all students who graduate from a high school in Arizona, regardless of immigration status.

SCR 1044 is now heading to second reading and, after second reading, a third reading in the State House. Following the passage of all three readings, it will make its way to the 2022 Ballot where it will be up to Arizona Voters to decide if DREAMers will have access to in-state tuition.

Reyna Montoya, founder & CEO of Aliento and DACA recipient - “I am very grateful to Rep. Udall, Rep. John, Rep. Cook and Rep. Espinoza for courageously standing with Arizona Dreamers pursuit for higher education by ensuring that Arizona Voters have an opportunity to decide the fate of instate tuition & financial aid for Arizona DREAMers. As a Mesa resident, a Dreamer, an educator and now an advocate for higher education equity I am extremely grateful for their courage. Today, Arizona took a step in the right now towards ensuring all Arizona students regardless of immigraiton status have access to our educational institutions.”

Jose Patiño, Director of Education & External Affairs and DACA recipient - “During my senior year of high school Prop 300 was passed by Arizona voters making undocumented students ineligible for instate tuition or publicly funded scholarships. I remember how 15 undocumented of us gathered in a school classroom to cry out of desperation. Today I cried because Arizona is moving in the right direction for Arizona Dreamers thanks to the courageous efforts of Rep. Udall , Rep. John, and Rep. Cook along with Rep. Espinoza and the Arizona House Democratic Caucus.”
