Aliento Features: Maria Dominguez

Introduce yourself.

Hola! My name is Maria Magdalena Dominguez Torres and I was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. My family immigrated to the United States when I was a couple months old. I got involved in Aliento for several reasons. But one of the things that urged me to do so was the lack of effort or attention I felt I was giving to some of the issues that my family and other immigrant families alike mine faced. I tried to apply for DACA in 2020. Yet my dreams were crushed. I felt hopeless and angry and I struggled with the fact that I was essentially powerless.. Aliento gave me the opportunity to grow, to make something out of all the things we go through. It provided a space where I could share where I was really from without being concerned about who heard. It gave me hope that change was and is possible.

Why does the work we are doing matter to you? Why is in-state tuition for everyone important?

The work Aliento does is vital. It is so crucial for kids, teens, adults, anyone to know that someone is fighting for them, that there is an organization like Aliento. Something that I had the opportunity of being a part of this year was to support in-state tuition for every Arizona highschool graduate who wishes to go to college and pursue a higher education. SCR-1044 gives me and several of my friends this chance. We aren’t asking for a “handout” but rather an opportunity to give back to the state we grew up in. That's why it matters.

What are some reflections from E-day? How did this impact you?

Something that I plan on taking with me would be the memories from E-Day. That was one of the best things I've done. It was scary for me and internally I felt as if “what if i’m not ready.” It was impossible not to doubt myself. Yet although I was feeling this way, Aliento never failed to provide me with the space I needed and comfort. And as the day went on I was feeling more and more confident. I believe it was that day that something just clicked. It didn’t matter if I was at the same level of the representatives or senators I was speaking to, I have a voice and I was going to be heard. At the end of the day I wasn’t doubting myself nor was I anxious but rather proud that I was surrounded with amazing friends who helped me realize this about myself. That would have to be my proudest moment.

What is a moment from the fellowship outside of E-day that really impacted you?

Attending Aliento’s 5 year anniversary was something that made me really happy. I haven't been here since the beginning but hearing the stories of how much people’s lives have been changed and benefited from this organization touched my heart. Another moment that impacted me was a tabling event I did. I remember setting up by a tree and putting out candies and flyers about the Aliento club and finding the courage to speak to highschoolers. Every moment that I'm taking with me is one that is littered with the help of many. It’s the beauty of this fellowship. Yes you are becoming a better person, better leader, stronger person, but you are always assured that you are not alone. You will always have help, support and lots of love. That is something that got me going.

Would you recommend this fellowship? Why?

Would I recommend this fellowship? Without a doubt the answer is yes. It always will be. I don’t think I've ever been involved with something as beneficial as Aliento. Since the day I crossed paths with them I have felt nothing but love. It's a beautiful environment to be in. I was put in a position where I was able to grow as a leader, and I was never alone. Constantly being supported. I was able to become a better version of myself. Aliento has provided so much for me and others that it is impossible not to tell others to be involved. I have made amazing friendships that I am eternally grateful for.
